Abstract: String topology is a mathematical field introduced by Sullivan and his collaborators. It is a branch of algebraic topology, which mainly studies the geometry and topology of the free loop space of smooth manifolds. Most of the results discovered so far are inspired by mathematical physics, such as the string field theory, and have found many applications with and connections to symplectic topology (such as the Floer theory, Fukaya category and symplectic field theory) and algebraic geometry (such as Calabi-Yau algebras/categories). In this introductory talk, I will discuss some background and in particular, some recent progress in string topology.
