ABSTRACT : Evariste Galoiis was born in october 1811, and died in 1832 in what is often considered as a murder . This young man played a very active role in the so-called July Revolution (1830) . After giving a few indications about this short eventful life , I shall proceed to explain in simple terms the meaning of Galois' ideas about the solutions of polynomial equations . Along the way we shall meet the first occurences of the so-called "finite geometries" . We shall indicate how the use of computers has changed the purely mathematical views .
