ABSTRACT : the classical theory of Galois type for ordinary differential equations was developed by Picard and Vessiot in the beginning of the 20th century . A further progress is due to Kolchin (around 1945) . I shall review the later developments , especially the generalization to the higher dimensional equations , as well to the nonlinear case . The notion of groupoid (an extension of the notion of group) is crucial , as well as the interface between differential and algebraic geometry . This subject is still wide open
