{Automorphisms of Vertex Operator Algebras.}
Abstract.
Vertex operator algebras became known in the 80s. Certain highest weight modules for affine Lie algebras and Virasoro algebras carry VOA structures. Another famous example is the moonshine module, which was originally conceived of as only a graded module for the monster simple group. The nature and extent of the VOA world is unclear. Recently, I have been coauthor of several articles for studying the automorphism groups of VOAs (variously with Dong, H"ohn, Ryba). In this talk, I will give some general background on VOAs, then report on some examples of VOAs and their automorphism groups. There is a rather common structure in a VOA called a frame, which leads to the important rationality property and to some interesting finite subgroups of the automorphism group (even in the case of infinite automorphism group).
