课程简介

Harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds are critical points for the Dirichlet energy and naturally generalize both geodesics and real-valued harmonic functions. Ideas concerning their regularity and singularity have proven useful for not only harmonic maps but for many other variational problems and applications (including liquid crystals and ferromagnetism). Lecture 1 will contain a summary, overview, and discussion of examples. Lecture 2 will discuss many basic ideas in one proof of the partial regularity for sphere-valued energy-minimizing maps. Lecture 3 will involve ideas used in the construction of many unusual regular and singular harmonic maps that are not energy-minimizing. Here there are several open questions.

演讲人简历

1971年Brown University获博士学位,导师是名著《Geometric Measure Theory》的作者Herbert Federer。历任University of Minnesota及Rice University教授。现任 W. L. Moody Professor,是几何测度论权威。
