Tuesday, April 23rd, 2019, 3:00 PM
International studies such as TIMSS and PISA have shown that students from some East Asian countries consistently outperformed their counterparts around the world in mathematics achievement. However, the high achievement of these students did not seem to be accompanied by correspondingly positive attitudes towards mathematics. In this presentation, in seeking for explanations of the achievement and attitudes of East Asian students, some relevant background characteristics of these countries from the TIMSS data are examined, and results of the TIMSS Video Study are briefly summarized. It is argued that the high achievement and yet negative attitudes of the East Asian students cannot be totally attributed to the background characteristics or the classroom teaching in these countries. Cultural factors are then discussed as possible explanations of achievement and attitudes. To reinforce the cultural explanations, results of three studies are then presented to show that these East Asian countries fall into a cluster. Finally, the significance of a cultural explanation of student achievement is discussed.
