Abstract:

C*-algebras are noncommutative topological spaces which open up many connections between functional analysis, topology, geometry, and group theory. Like all mathematical objects, they can be studied in terms of their symmetries. Moreover, they can be used to analyze groups and their actions. The latter yield particularly intriguing examples of C*-algebras. The classification and structure theory of amenable C*-algebras has seen spectacular progress in the past decade, largely spurred by approximation properties intimately related to amenability type conditions. In this talk I will give a survey of these classification and structure results, using amenable dynamical systems as guiding and motivating examples.
