K-theory and index theory of edge-following states in topological insulators

Abstract:

I will provide, with concretely computable examples, a mathematical introduction to the mathematics governing topological insulators and their remarkable edge-following states. These recently discovered materials realise in real physical world, deep K-theory, index-theory, and noncommutative geometry principles.
