Abstract:
We will review the coadjoint orbit method of Kirillov and Kostant, which suggests that irreducible unitary representations of a Lie group G should arise as geometric quantization of coadjoint orbits of G. It encounters difficulties when G is a noncompact reductive group. However, the work of Barbasch, Vogan, etc. strongly suggest that the orbit method is still valid to a large extent. If time permits, I will talk about possible ways to quantize orbits in this case.
