Abstract:

I will introduce the definitions of stable ranks (Bass stable rank and topological stable rank). Then I will talk about some works on the stable rank of C*-algebras. Consider a free and minimal action of Z^d on a compact Hausdorff space X. The main result shows that the stable rank of the corresponding crossed product C^*-algebra C(X) \rtimes Z^d is 1. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture of Niu and Phillips. This talk is based on a joint work with Zhuang Niu.
