摘 要
This is a talk for a general audience interested in science. It will discuss several key elements that define a scientist, citing historical examples from the past and present.

演 讲 人 简 历
Professor Chong Chi Tat received his PhD from Yale University. His area of research is in mathematical logic, especially recursion (computability) theory. He was the Deputy President and Provost of the National University of Singapore from 1996 to 2004. He became Head of Mathematics Department in 2006. He currently holds the title of "University Professor" at the National University of Singapore, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of the Association for Symbolic Logic (USA). He is also a managing editor of the Journal of Mathematical Logic.
