Algebra
 
The group was founded in early 1950s and was chaired by Prof. Cao Xihua and Prof. Zhu Fuzu, it is one of the research and graduate study centers for algebra in China, famous especially in representations of algebraic and quantum groups, algebraic geometry, cell theory of Coxeter groups, Lie algebras and algebraic number theory. Nowadays, the group consists of 7 full professors (Prof. Chen Zhijie, Prof. Du Jie, Prof. Shen Guangyu, Prof. Shi Jianyi, Prof. Tan Shengli, Prof. Wang Jianpan and Prof. Xiao Gang), 5 associate professors (Prof. Han Shian, Prof. Hu Naihong, Prof. Lin Lei, Prof. Rui Hebin and Prof. Wu Yunsheng) and 1 lecturer. Among them, there are 3 Ying Tung Fok Prize winners, 2 Qiushi Prize winners and 2 S. S. Chern Math Prize winners. Moreover, the research achievements of the group also won 2 National Prizes for Natural Sciences, 5 academic prizes issued by the Ministry of Education, as well as 2 academic prizes issued by the Shanghai City Government. In the last two decades, hundreds of research papers and several monographes by the members of the group have been published, including two volumes in the Lecture Notes series by Springer-Verlag and one volume in the Memoirs series by the American Mathematical Society. Recently, 2 research projects of the group are supported by NSF of China as national key projects, and one project is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology as part of a 973 key project.

Geometry
 
Founded in early 1950s, the group was once chaired by famous geometric educator Prof. Sun Zeying and Prof. Qian Duanzhuang. The textbooks Modern Geometry, Basic Geometry and Analytic Geometry edited by the above two professors had great affect to the geometrical courses in colleges and universities in China from early '50s to late '70s. Nowadays, the group consists of full professors Shen Chunli , 4 associate professors and 4 lecturer. The research areas of the group are global differential geometry, Yang-Mills gauge theory, topology and geometry of low-dimensional manifolds, geometrical analysis and mathematical physics. Besides, 1 research project of the group are supported by NSF of China .

Theory of Functions
 
Founded in 1950s, the group was chaired by Prof. Li Ruifu and Prof. Cheng Qixiang. The textbooks Complex Variables and Mathematical Analysis have great influence on the courses in colleges and universities in China, and the latter won an excellent textbook prize issued by the Ministry of Education. The main research areas are C*-algebras, value distribution theory of meromorphic functions and operator theory.. Recently, the group consists of 4 full professors (Prof. Lin Huaxin, Prof. Wu Liangsen, Prof. Pang Xuecheng and Prof. Li Wenxia), 3 associate professors and 1 lecturers.

Differential Equations
 
The group was chaired by Prof. Qian Duanzhuang and Prof. Chen Changping in 1950s. In the early '60s, the research works of Prof. Chen Changping in partial differential operators had important influence in China. Nowadays, the group has been developing gradually in several directions such as ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and financial mathematics. The main research areas are bifurcation theory in dynamical system, partial differential equations, applied ordinary differential equations, applied partial differential equations and mathematical economics. The achievements won The First Prize on Nature Science of National Progress in Science and Technology nominated by the Ministry of Education of China; The First Prize on Natural Science issued by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two academic prizes issued by the Ministry of Education of China; and one prize on Science and Technology of Shanghai. There are three full professors ( also PhD project supervisors) (Prof. Zhu Deming , Prof. Zhou Feng and Prof. Liu Yongming), two associate professors and four lecturers in the group.

The group offers MS and PhD programs on applied mathematics. (2003.5.)

Computational Mathematics
 
The Computational mathematics group was founded in early 1960s. Recently, the group is growing rapidly on the strength of recruiting qualified new members from both abroad and home. Nowadays, the group consists of 6 teachers ( all granted Ph. D.), including three full professors, one associate professor and two assistant professors. Professor Wei Musheng, who is the academic leader of the group, has made splendid progress in numerical algebra and numerical solution of partial differential equations. He has published nearly 70 research articles and one monoghaph; Professor Chen Guoliang, whos research interests including numerical linear algebra and bounded linear operators in infinite dimensional spaces, has published more than 50 research articles; professor Zhan, Xinzhi, whos research interest including matrix analysis and matrix inequalities, has published more than 20 research articles and one monoghaph.

The main research areas are numerical algebra, numerical solution of partial differential equations, as well as paralled algorithms. The achievements of the group have won several scientific and technological prizes.

Control Theory
 
Founded in 1976, the group was among the best research groups of control theory in China in late '70s and '80s. Today, the group is famous of its research in wavelet theory and its application, SVM and pattern recognition. The group now consists of 1 full professor (Prof. Yuan Zhengdong), 2 associate professors and 3 lecturers. They mainly concern linear and nonlinear control system, system identification and adaptive control theory, wavelet theory and its application, SVM and pattern recognition, CAD of control system.. The achievements in these areas won several prizes, including an academic prize issued by the Ministry of Education.

The group offers master and doctor programs on system analysis and integration, as well as master program on operations research and control theory. (2003.5.)

Operational Research
 
Founded in 1958, the group was growing rapidly in '80s and '90s. It was quite famous in semi-infinite multiobjective programming and algebra graph theory. Nowadays, the group consists of 1 full professor (Prof. Hong Yuan), 4 associate professors and 1 lecturer. Their research interests are mainly algebra graph theory, topological graph theory,graph theory and arithmetic,combinatorial optimization and mathematical programming. The achievements won several prizes, including an academic prize issued by the Ministry of Education.

The group offers master program on operations research and control theory. (2003.5.)

Teaching of Mathematics
 
  Based on the guideline of thoroughly understanding the international main trend and greatly contributing toward classroom practice, the Group of Mathematics Education makes every endeavor to the exploration on both theoretical and practical aspects of mathematics education and actively participates exchanges in international community of mathematics education. It becomes now a group famous in China for its remarkable academic achievements and is also noted in international academic community.

There are now 1 professor, 1 part-time professor, 6 associate professors and 2 instructors in the team, among them 4 doctors are graduated from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Japan, Singapore or Hong Kong respectively. Their research areas cover all of the branches of the field including fundamental theories of mathematics education, mathematics curriculum, psychology of mathematics education, teacher education, history and philosophy of mathematics, assessment of mathematics education, mathematics teaching, mathematics competition and information technology in mathematics education etc. Having won higher academic position, some of the members are or were the members of important organizations or activities such as national societies of mathematics education, ICMI EC, IPC of ICME, ICMI Studies, ICMI regional conferences.

The members of the group are undertaking or have finished many important research projects, such as national investigation of mathematics learning at junior high school level, reform of curriculum for mathematics teacher education, research on the national standard of mathematics curriculum in senior high school etc. They also published many research papers, monographs, and textbooks. The series of Advanced Seminar on Mathematics Education approved and funded by the National Ministry of Education during the past 12 years become well-known forum in this research area. Mathematics Teaching is a popular journal with distinct characters. M.Ed. and Ed. D programs in mathematics education reside in the group.

Devoting efforts to elementary education, they undertake responsibilities of leading teacher training at the national and city level, compile and publish mathematics textbooks for secondary schools, conduct graduate courses for high school teachers, coach students for mathematics competition all the levels from local to international mathematics Olympia. There is much collaboration with many schools in Shanghai. Mathematics Teaching Technology Center (MTTC) cooperated with Texas Instruments Company from US now has set up 55 experimental schools.

Adult Education
 
  Founded in 1990s. There are 20 teachers including 9 asscociate professors. They have made great contributions on adult education, teachers training for middle schools and compiling correspondence teaching matters.
